How do we facilitate the continued Jewish journey for students in the GTA?

Hillel's challenge is to help the next generation choose a life filled with Jewish pride and values that resonates with their individuality. Thanks to our donors, Hillel is able to consistently develop and implement a variety of initiatives that address students' interests, lifestyles, and quests for deeper meaning and knowledge.

Hillel of Greater Toronto works to engage the approximately 8,000 Jewish students attending university and community colleges throughout the GTA. Hillel prides itself on implementing the value of pluralism: working with individual students with affiliations ranging from every denomination of Judaism and all levels of Jewish education.

• Going to college is the single most common experience for Jewish young people: more common than Bar Mitzvah, camp, day school or a trip to Israel

 

• Young people are on their own for the first time, making critical decisions regarding their future, and the future of their families. It is an existential moment and the community’s last chance to make a connection

 

•  Hillel of Greater Toronto is ideally positioned to make a positive impact

• 34% of all Canadian Jewish students, attend universities and colleges in the GTA* .Investing in Hillel of Greater Toronto is an investment in insuring all Jewish students attending schools in the GTA make an enduring commitment to Jewish life.  

• 26% of Jewish students report they are less active in terms of their Jewish living since attending college or university* University and college campuses are the last organized frontier where the community can impact a Jewish youth’s identity before they disappear into the work force.

• 61% of Jewish students work (full or part time) while pursing their degree* .In between academics, work for pay, and the family responsibilities that come from living at home, students’ leisure time is scarce. Hillel must be able to offer cutting edge programming and events in order to compete with other social opportunities.

•A significant number of Toronto Jewish university and college students are immigrants (or children of immigrants) to Canada By hiring dynamic and creative Israeli and Russian professionals Hillel has the capacity to engage this population often left out of traditional “Canadian” Jewry.

• 44% of Jewish students in Toronto have a moderate level of Jewish identification* This largest segment of students have already demonstrated an interest in Jewish life, but lack active involvement and are weary of organized communal agencies. Hillel works to engage this cohort in creative, non traditional means.
